With a diploma in opticianry, you may combine business, technology, fashion, and healthcare. You'll research all facets of contemporary optics, such as refraction techniques, contact lenses, and eyeglasses. You will be able to work part-time while you study because classes meet three days a week. When you graduate, you'll be prepared to sit for the College of Opticians test, which is a prerequisite for obtaining a British Columbia optician license.

Practical training

Through the Douglas College Vision Care Centre, a retail store on campus that is available to the public, you will receive practical experience in eye examination, automated refracting, and dispensing eyeglasses and contact lenses. With a full eyeglass dispensing service, a complete contact lens lab with five fitting rooms and one automated refraction station, you'll work with conventional and specialist optical equipment. Sharpen your abilities with retail site placements that provide the hands-on experience and professional contacts need to launch your career.

Favourable employment prospects

In their first or second semester, many of our students are employed on a part-time basis and work full-time over the summer. Additionally, polls indicate that almost all of our graduates in the discipline of opticianry are actively employed.

Assessment and acknowledgment of prior learning

You can be qualified for direct entrance into the second year of the program if you are currently a licensed optician and wish to earn your credentials for fitting contact lenses.
