Sault College

In Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, there is a public institution called Sault College of Applied Arts and Technology. It started out as the Ontario Vocational Center in 1965. For students interested in post-secondary, apprenticeship, adult retraining, continuing education, and contract training programs, Sault College now provides full-time and part-time opportunities. The combined full-time and part-time enrollment at Sault College comes to roughly 4,500 students per year.

The Sault Ste. Marie opened its doors in the fall of 1965. Ontario Vocational Center for Marie (OVC). Similar vocational schools started in Ottawa and London (now Fanshawe College) (now Algonquin College). As a development of the OVC system, the Ontario government established a public system of Colleges of Applied Arts & Technology in 1967. The college was founded as Ontario's college system was developing. On May 21, 1965, colleges of Applied Arts and Technology were founded. In Sault Ste. The Marie's OVC was transformed into the Sudbury campus of the recently founded Cambrian College. In North Bay, a second satellite campus opened. Colleges quickly received favorable public opinion and support. In fact, Cambrian's enrollment expansion was so quick that the satellite campuses became autonomous universities in just five years. 1973 saw the establishment of the independent Sault College of Applied Arts & Technology, while the North Bay campus of Cambrian became Canadore College.

Sault College has expanded significantly throughout the years, introducing programs across all academic fields. Sault College offers education in a variety of fields, such as: Apprenticeship, Aviation, Business, Community Integration through Co-operative Education (CICE), Community Services, Continuing Education, Culinary and Hospitality, Engineering Technology, General Arts and Science, Health Programs, Information Technology Studies, Justice Studies, Language, and more. They currently cater to the postsecondary educational needs of more than 4,500 part-time and full-time students annually.  Resources from Lake Superior State University and Sault College are frequently shared.
