Four courses are required for the MSc, plus an ethics course. The Department of Chemical and Materials Engineering requires that at least two of the courses be at the 600-level or higher. The remaining courses must be at the 500 level or higher in a science department or at the 400 level or higher in the faculty of engineering. The supervisor and Associate Chair (Graduate) must both authorize any science courses taken at the 400 level. To effectively use, create, design, transport, and transform energy and materials, chemical engineers apply principles from chemistry, physics, math, biology, and economics.
